Avoiding Paw Blisters and Other Summer Tips

Avoiding Paw Blisters and Other Summer Tips

Most dogs love to spend time outside, and summer is a great time to head out with them.  A little preparation can make the difference between a fun outing and one that results in blistered paws, dehydration or a muddy car. Here are five tips for a fun - and healthy - day in the park.

1. Take your shoes off

Before heading out, check the pavement barefoot. If it’s too hot for you to stand for a few seconds, it is too hot for your pup and will likely be uncomfortable and might even result in burns or blisters. Wait until things cool down a bit before you head out.

2. Bring Clean Water (standing water - out)

Dogs get thirsty fast, especially when they’re running around. Dogs will drink whatever water they find, but standing water can have bacteria or parasites. Drinking from other dogs’ bowls also isn’t ideal, since a dog with an infection can lead to an infection in your healthy pup.  Make sure you have fresh water and a collapsable bowl so your dog is  hydrated and healthy.

3. Ice cubs

A great way to increase hydration is with ice cubes, so if you have an iced drink, rinse off an ice cube and give it to your pup to increase their hydration (and fun). Of course, make sure the ice cube makes sense based on the size of your dog.

4. A Towel for Muddy Paws

This isn’t a health tip for your dog, so much as a well being tip for you. Even on sunny days, the dog park can have muddy patches. A small towel can help avoid muddy footprints in your car or on your carpet.  Pro tip: Keep a designated “dog towel” in your car at all times.

5. A First-Aid Kit (Just in Case)

Accidents happen, even at the happiest of places. A small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers (for splinters or ticks) can give you peace of mind. Hopefully, you won’t need it—but it’s always better to be prepared.

Pack It All Up

With these essentials in your bag, you’re ready for a stress-free, fun-filled visit to the dog park. Being prepared will also make you very popular at the dog park.
